Does anyone else carry 2 knives?

Well I recently purchased a Kershaw Scallion, for self-defense. I will not be using this knife for utility or to clean my fingernails or anything else.

So I decided I would also carry my old pocket blade for things like this.

You think this is weird?

Re: Does anyone else carry 2 knives?

looks like a nice little knife

i would question the idea about carrying 2 knives
if you're ever stopped by an overzealous LEO
how are you gonna explain the need for 2 knives ?

maybe just stick to this Kershaw Scallion
and practice opening it until it becomes an instinct
and practice opening with both hands

also check for any local laws about " assisted " opening knives

Quote:

U.S. Customs has proposed revoking earlier rulings that assisted opening knives are not switchblades. The proposed new rule would not only outlaw assisted opening knives its broad definition could also easily be interpreted to include one-handed opening knives and even most other pocket knives.

If you rely on a knife to defend yourself, always carry at least two. Practice taking them out and deploying them.

If it is a close distance, you may even have an advantage over someone with a gun.

Quoted for truth.

I have a Bechmade Pika that I keep in the front shirt pocket pretty much all the time The clip on the back of the blade when tucked in my shirt makes it look like im carrying a plain old regular pen.

I practice alot with it but I havent gotten a smooth deployment yet but I know I would have a distictint advantage in a conflict because most would assume Im reaching for a pen or my money( robbery motive)

Very good knife for the price

Cabelas has them for 20 bucks

I carry a small folder on my keychain in one pocket and my swiss army knife I never go anywhere without in the other. Always nice to have a backup just in case. Neither would be any use for self defense, but I don't depend on them for that.

How 'bout three?

I carry a very nice Benchmade folder,

And a Leatherman Wave, and

An old, tiny Kershaw splinterpicker

On my keyring.

I suppose this makes me

A very dangerous person indeed!

More seriously, folks, it is

Just tools for living.

Good choice of knife. I'm a fan of Karambits for defense knives personally. I know emerson make's a nice folder with the "wave." I prefer fixed blades.

Knives are nasty weapons. There's nothing pretty about killing someone with any weapon, but doing it with a knife seems more personal and intimate to me.

I'm starting Krav Maga again soon, so I guess I'll get a refresher on how nasty they are in the near future. Anyone want to bounce a nightclub with me? :no_ma: :452:

What better job than having drunk tossers try and stab you for 86ing them after they grope a customer.

Re: Does anyone else carry 2 knives?

I carry two for self-defense in my jeans pockets--a pair of Spyderco Native IIIs. The clips are reversed for each (so they hang correct for their left-side/right-side positions) they hang butt-up and I put "wave cuts" into the blade spines so they flip open automatically when drawn.

I've never had a cop ask me about them (then again I've never had to use them either). They are right at the legal blade length for my state.

They are intended for SD only, I don't use them for anything else.
I also carry a Swiss Army knife if I think I'll need a pocketknife.

-end-

Re: Does anyone else carry 2 knives?

A knife for self defense seems impractical. A knife puts you in too close (merely an extension of the arm) of anyone who is has some basic hand to hand fighting skill.

IMHO, carry mace or a handgun (depending on your situation) - either are much more effective than a knife.

Be Safe,

ST

Good strategy with the front-reach. Raise the other hand simultaneously, as if you were in the "hands up" position. If he comes at you with something, you're cocked and ready for a powerful downward hammerfist or wrist smash as you step back and drop your weight.

P.S. Jesus loves you

I seriously beg to differ here.

The hand to hand fighting skill guy is the one who does not want to get within reach of you and your knife.

If you learn just a few basic knife moves, and practice them often, you will take out 99% of the "highly trained" MA experts you find out there.

When I used to teach MA, I would get a lot of people in who thought they knew something, who had spent a lot of years studying this and that. The were fast, strong, precise, etc.

I had to "open their minds" to the new material, and the only way to do that was to spar with simulated knives or multiple opponents. Wake up call.

We did an exercise where I told them that I would use only one technique- a straight knife thrust (yet delivered with speed and off-timing; they didn't know that part, hehe...) and that they could do WHATEVER they wanted.

It always went the same. They tried all the lame crap they learned, tried to come in and "get me" or whatever. They ended up with knife-point shaped bruises all over their torso and inner-arms, a mouthful of humble pie, and a head full of sense.

I was a gentleman, I left the face, throat and groin alone.

A hangun trumps all, but only if you have the time and space (and training) to deploy it in an emergency situation. From the time it takes you to pull out your gun and disengage the safety, I can have my knife in your adams apple if we are ten feet apart. Plus, my knife won't jam, misfire or run out of ammo. I don't need a special permit to carry it ANYWHERE, and it is untraceable (assuming they can find it).

Same with pepper spray. Unless you've got it at the ready, my knife is in you before you can say boo.

If we get into a clinch, my knife will still be slashing and gouging, but your pepper spray will likely be rendered ineffective. All the while you are worried about getting some irritant in my eyes (and busying one or both of your valuable hands to do this), I'm carving into your arteries, and blood loss begins to take its toll on you.

Knife, gun, short stick. LOTS of practice.

Learning to fight with a walking stick is good too. Getchya one of these babies:

Recently had a lost Gerber AR3.5 (black blade) replaced as a birthday gift. Has my name engraved on the blade. It's too nice of a knife to actually use. So I carry 2 knives nowadays. In retrospect it would have been much cooler to have the words, "Your Name" engraved on the blade. The other knife is also a Gerber; EZ-Out Skeleton.

100 blade victims a month

By ANDREW NICOLL
Scottish Political Reporter

Published: 27 May 2009
rigTeaserImage
THE growing menace of Scotland’s knife culture is claiming more than 100 victims every month.

The shock new figures released yesterday show 1,278 people were taken to hospital after being attacked with a blade last year.

The worst health board area was Glasgow with a toll of 779 victims — that’s two EVERY DAY.

Last night Tory justice spokesman Bill Aitken called for courts to take a harder line and cage all yobs caught even carrying a knife for two years.

He said: “These figures are a shocking tip of the iceberg. These are only the victims that were treated.

“There are many more incidents that never made it to the hospital door.

“We need to send a message loud and clear — go out with a knife and you’ll be going inside.

“Those who use knives should expect an even longer term in jail than two years. If we don’t take tough action now then the knife crime epidemic will spiral out of all control.”

The figures released by Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon showed there were 109 victims in Lanarkshire, 101 in Ayrshire and Arran, 131 in Lothian and 45 each in Grampian and Tayside.

Rural health board areas were barely touched by knife crime. Borders recorded just five victims last year, Highland just nine and there were none in the Western Isles, Orkney or Shetland.

But while the Tories called for tougher sentences, one of Scotland’s top cops said automatic prison terms were not the solution.

Strathclyde Chief Constable Stephen House told Holyrood’s Justice Committee: “There is a public appetite for a person carrying a knife to be locked away.

“If someone is carrying a knife for violence, automatic jail sentences might be the right thing.

“But if people are carrying a knife through peer pressure then that needs sensible treatment. A second or third offence should get six months.”

I carry a nice pocket knife in my left pocket as I am left handed.

I carry one silver maple and a pocket knife in my left pocket and my cell phone in my right.

I have never thought about carrying 2 knives. Maybe strap one on around the ankle. You lose your knife while fighting crouch down as if injured and grab the knife on your ankle and wait until your opponent gets over you and then stand up and thrust quickly upwards penetrating the blade under the rib cage. Drop him like a stone!

I agree -

A knife is a good stealth weapon in the hands of one who is trained. But the average person would find it difficult to defend themselves with a knife from someone with basic skills. The knife is still just an extension of the arm - it can be taken

An old trainer taught us that if they are within 20 ft - you are better off taking the knife and getting the skell to the ground before you deploy your weapon.

Finally - if you pull a knife you are subject to the use of deadly force by the defender.

Keep your knife in your pocket unless you are sure you are fighting for your life.

Again - I state this for the average person considering using a knife for self protection.

Be safe,

ST

I've studied knife fighting extensively, and there are some technics that will unsure your survival.
1. Breath thru the nose
2. Keep your hat brim down low
3. Toss your knife from one hand to the next while circling your opponent
4. Wear a white shirt and polished boots
5. Look like John Wayne or James Coburn.

Can't and won't are totally different paradigms. The aesthetics of knife do not actually prevent use.
I have my misgivings about the gift. There is a reason I never replaced the lost knife on my own. I was to obsessive about marring the finish on the blade. Finished blades make zero utilitarian sense. You are correct that the knife is a fashion accessory. I suppose you could say the same for the 500+ special design/release Case knives that I have but it doesn't prevent me from enjoying the ownership of them.

The utilitarian knife I do carry is no frills and I have no inhibitions from wielding for any task it may be needed for. So where am I going wrong by having a nice looking blade on my hip as well?

And if you're good and have a cocky confidence about you, you can actually draw a knife from your belt, open it and throw it with deadly accuracy faster then a bullet. If I may offer some alternatives to this comprehensive list....

1. "Snap cut" instead of slash (so you can nick the bone)
2. Cut his limbs whenever they are within range
3. Constantly try for the eyes and face. In close, between the legs.
4. Keep your own position as tight and closed as possible
5. Keep moving!!!
6. Use off-timing, and stab, stab, stab to the vitals.
7. If he has a weapon, wait for him to extend it, then hack and stab at his hand/arm until he drops it.
8. Practice simple techniques against multiple opponents, and practice them to exhaustion.
9. Move naturally and fluidly.
10. Don't forget to stomp his foot, and spear him in the eye with your empty hand.

And you'd be surprised how effective a reverse flying drop kick is in disarming your opponent. Don't try this unless it's dark and there is some cool music playing in the background. And you should be out numbered at least 5 to 1. Oh, and there should be a drop dead gorgeous woman with massive cleavage being held behind by her arms making her boobies look even bigger. :cry1:

And make sure the wind is blowing in from the Southeast and plunge quickly 3 times in the Northwest direction. Once executed drop down quickly doing a split in order to avoid the opponent's lunge forward. When the opponent is committed, lunge quickly with arm outstretched in the Northwest-West direction and then quickly roll forward coming up fast now facing Southeast. Promptly check wind speed and if calculations persist drive the blade into the opponent's spinal cord.

Make sure to wait for music to climax before finishing off your opponent to get best results.

I used to practice throwing a knife when I was young and dumb. Never did find a folding knife that flew worth a damn. If you're expecting to throw ... two things. First, get a knife that's meant to be thrown. Second, have a spare on hand for when it misses.

Yes, hefty blades are better, if you can carry them. You want to cultivate a meat cleaver type of chop, snapping with the wrist. Snake it out and back in real fast, on multiple angles. To the face also.

Do this to a person's arm or hand, chances are they'll drop whatever their holding and be unable to continue using that limb.

When you cut or nick the periosteum, this should feel just like a broken bone, because this is where the nerves are.

That being said, I continued a fight once with a broken hand, and won. I could still use my upper forearm with the big bone on the outside (head of the ulnar bone near the hand). But no way I was going to hold a knife in the broken hand, it simply wouldn't work.

"Don't go out to stupid places at stupid times and do stupid things."

Wisdom.

Oh, and there should be a drop dead gorgeous woman with massive cleavage being held behind by her arms making her boobies look even bigger....

Angelina could disarm with just a smile (preferably with nothing else on, in my fantasy).

I thought you were a runner, not a fighter? You'd be better off keeping that dirt bikes chain well lubed and the gas tank full of fresh gas.

You do an awful lot from that recliner. Like pass judgment, and spin statments I made to read as something totally diffrent (see thread false alert...whew).

Once again you come in here with that bad attitude like you have it out for me. Once again it is totally unwarranted. Please do like your signature says and do the right thing. Lets be friends and please quit saying stupid stuff about me that you decided to make up in you head.

We may disagree, but lets be friends.

Been thinking about a 2nd knife. Just got some in the mail a day ago to add to the collection. In order left to right. Kershaw Onion (my present EDC knife), Kershaw Leek, Kershaw Shallot, Kershaw ener-G2, Spyder Endura 4, Spyder Police (sweet blade:) and Cold Steel, War Head. ( highly recomend the war head, is a great price and may come in handy later, easy to convert to a spear due to its design coming from a spear, duh. Got it for 17.99 on ebay. The police was pricy at 130.00. REALY want to get a fixed blade, the Tai Pan. but can not justify the 230.00 beans. Guess you can tell, I an NOT a fan of anything serrated! Do not even use regular steak knives in our house that are serrated. Just tears. Nothing beats a sharp blade.

I used to carry 2 knives...but they kept getting in the way of my 1911A1 and 2-mag paddle holsters, so I stopped.

This is my pocket-baby that is with me at all times:

This is my bush-knife, in case of Coyotes, wolves and bear. It has close to 9 inches of blade length, if memory serves. It is mounted on the shoulder strap of my hunting pack, laying on my chest:

This is my "camping" knife. Same position as my hunting knife, but on my camping pack. It's quite heavy, but durable.

I have a lot more, but these are my choice knives. My choice blades are all coincidentally Smith and Wessun.

I hope that bush knife shoots laser beams or thunderbolts or something. If you're confronted by a pack of hungry wolves or a raging bear, I'd use it to commit seppuku. This is where I think pepper spray or gun is better.
